The rumor is as follows: Arsenal are ready to spend big on either Griezmann or Lewandowski. We know it isn’t true, but which would you rather have, Gooners?

Arsenal’s search for a striker is in desperation status and has been for awhile now. Everyone that was a potential solution moved away or is too expensive. That being said, the papers cannot be outdone. They are conjuring up this brand new rumor that Arsenal are ready to throw caution to the wind to land a striker superstar.

With Giroud returning late, Welbeck out, Walcott no good and Akpom too young, there is no doubting that Arsenal needs that striker, so with that being said, let’s dig into that juicy bit of farce, the rumor that Arsene Wenger is ready to spend upwards of £60m to secure the services of either Polish assassin Robert Lewandowski or the silky French prince, Antoine Griezmann.

We will start with Lewandowski, as he is reportedly Wenger’s ‘first choice’. The Polish international is renowned far and wide as one of the best strikers in the game. While not on the elite tier of Ronaldo and Messi, he is certainly on the half tier below them, where not many others reside.

Lewandowski plays a similar style to Giroud, using his strength and hold-up play to create space and his turn-and-fire finishing makes him a constant threat to score from anywhere remotely near the goal.

At 27 years old, he is in his prime for Bayern Munich and would be able to deliver that clinical finishing that Arsenal so desires up front, while still bringing a lot of the same non-scoring perks that Giroud does.

The second candidate, and, according to the rumor, the second choice for Wenger, is Antoine Griezmann. 24 years of age and the spearhead of a very defensive Atletico Madrid, Griezmann is fresh off of a golden boot Euros that, while impressive, owes a lot to Olivier Giroud.

His speed and technical ability make him a fantastic foil to Giroud, but as we saw at the Euros, their combination play can be a treat as well. The two combined to form a damn-near perfect duo.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

All in all, both strikers are a desirable outcome. There is no doubting that. You may have noticed that I did not address the plausibility of either rumor. No one expects them to actually happen. It’s just not a Wenger thing to do when he could force feed us another season of Theo Walcott.

Anyway, the debate ends here. The winner is Antoine Griezmann for one simple factor. He offers a different style than Olivier Giroud. Lewandowski would undoubtedly be fantastic with Arsenal, but he does not offer any added versatility. The Gunners would be playing the same way all the time (unless Theo Walcott got in on the action).

Griezmann offers so much more versatility than the Pole. He doesn’t even have to play the lead striking role. He didn’t in the Euros. That was part of his main strength, sharing the pitch with Giroud.
