Arsenal witnessed an absolutely horrid effort from Alex Iwobi, his worst one yet. It’s time to do something with him because he did not belong.

Yes, I feel bad for railing so hard on Alex Iwobi. He’s a young Arsenal man through and through and he has amazing potential. But he is getting progressively worse and against PSG, he had no business being on the pitch. None at all.

Not only did he do his best Gervinho impression by dribbling impressively into an attacking position just outside the top of the box before infuriatingly giving it away.

Then there was the flick-on with his head that outsmarted David Ospina when he had Lucas’ header pegged.

It was a constant display of ineptitude. The closer Iwobi gets to the opposing net, the more he seizes up and loses his senses. I can’t help but think that he was mentally psyching himself out of the game after missing that golden chance in leg one Paris.

Whatever the case, this was proof that Iwobi probably needs to take a good long look at himself and Wenger needs to take a good long look at if Iwobi has any uses to the present title push, because I’m thinking he doesn’t.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

I don’t blame Iwobi at all. I’m not mad at him or anything. Not like if this was Walcott. He’s too young to harbor the blame. I don’t think he has been put into a positive position. Wenger clearly has a high opinion of the kid and we all should, but leaving him in the starting XI when he is so clearly not contributing isn’t only hurting the team, it’s hurting him.

This is what happened to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and, as I mentioned not that long ago, I’d hate to see Iwobi go down the same path as the Ox, where so much was placed on him from the start as a young lad and he faltered at the first sign of trouble.

A return to the academy side wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world. He needs confidence and letting him continue to harm the team is not going to provide him any. There were times against PSG where I was begging the team to not send the ball over to the left because I didn’t want to have to see Iwobi give the ball away.
