Arsenal’s defensive chops are plain to see. Present and future, we should be set, but Calum Chambers may introduce a promising plot twist.

There was a time – like, last year – when Arsenal‘s defense was in a world of hurt. Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista were a revolving door next to Laurent Koscielny, as it was clear that the BFG was over the hill, but the Brazilian hadn’t started his climb yet.

Help was needed, and there weren’t any internal options and the likelihood that Wenger spent big on a defender was about as likely as Francis Coquelin scoring a goal.

Only, Wenger did spend big on the defense. And then some. After spending a small chunk of change on Rob Holding, Le Prof solidified the summer with a massive £35m deposit on Shkodran Mustafi, who has taken the Premier League by storm and given this defense the solidity it has craved for so long.

This year has been a defensive sunrise, as everything seems to be falling together. Kostafi is unstoppable and behind them, both Gabriel and Holding are showing the ability to be legitimate Premier League defenders.

Per Mertesacker is also coming back, but it’s really tough to say what to expect from him, if anything.

And don’t forget young Krystian Bielik, who figures to be the long-term plan of this defense after his conversion from defensive midfielder.

But we are forgetting one man. And that’s probably because that one man is on loan at Middlesbrough where he is quietly doing incredibly well. Boro boasts “the best defense you'[ve never heard of” and our man Calum is right at the heart of it.

Even journalists are admitting that they were wrong, and we know how rare that is. Jonathan Taylor of Gazette Live has admitted that he was completely wrong about the young Englishman, who has become a mainstay in this fantastic Boro defense.

So what happens to this Arsenal defense if Chambers comes back and, all of a sudden, has capitalized on all of his potential?

It could be a pleasant plot twist that we didn’t see coming. Chambers could disrupt the steady future this defense has and who benefits from that? Everyone. Everyone will have to step up their game to fend off this new challenge.

Chambers still has a future wherever he wants. he’s young and, despite his lack of bonafide progress, has always showed strong potential and great ability.
