Arsenal: What The Hell Does Wenger Want With Jan Oblak?
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal are supposedly eyeing up a big money deal for Atletico Madrid keeper Jan Oblak. Uh… what? What the hell is this all about?
There are certain rumors that you look at and fantasize about. There are certain rumors you look at and shake your head at in disgust. And then there are rumors you just look at and say ‘what the hell?’ The latest Arsenal transfer rumor is of the latter variety.

According to the Metro, Arsene Wenger is eyeing up an £85m deal for Atletico Madrid keeper Jan Oblak.
Seriously, that’s what they’re saying.
I haven’t written on this rumor for a few days because I’ve been ignoring it, hoping it would just be a figment of my imagination.
Nope, it’s real. There is actually talk out there that Wenger is contemplating spending Antoine-Griezmann-like money on Antoine Griezmann’s team’s keeper. When we already have Petr Cech, who we got for less than one-eighth of the price.
This is real.
Let’s throw the price tag away, because that is the major disqualifier, and focus on on the actual prospectus of Oblak even coming to Arsenal.
Even with no price tag, we run into some serious obstacles. For starters, when have we ever successfully lured an Atletico product from the Spanish capital?
Try never. And we have tried. From Antoine Griezmann to Jose Gimenez to the manager himself, Diego Simeone, the Gunner’s, according to rumors, pretty much just want to be Atletico Madrid.

Honestly though, that’s not a bad goal.
But Oblak? No way. Cech still has several years to give to his North London career and Oblak is most certainly not a back-up. Nor would he in any way want to wait for Cech to make way to take over as a first-team keeper.
Nor would Cech want to step aside and let someone else take over the role when he has done nothing to lose it.
And, since we are on the topic of doubting, what about David Ospina? The Colombian shot-stopper is still a fantastic option and, yes, I do believe that he can be retained as a back-up a hell of a lot easier than either Cech or Oblak can.

So there you have it. I don’t think anyone actually believes that Oblak is on his way to North London, but just in case you do, I hope that this was enough to deter your bizarre fantasies.
