Arsenal are usually all about being cheeky with their signings and sometimes it pays off. Christian Pulisic would definitely be cheeky.

Arsene Wenger is one to try to outsmart himself. Just look at the Yaya Sanogo signing. Bringing him to Arsenal was the quintessential ‘look how smart I can be’ move. Of course, it didn’t pan out, but that’s neither here nor there.

The Gunners are now linked to another, more proven ‘look how smart I can be’ move, and it’s a move that, even in its infancy, we should be incredibly excited about.

Christian Pulisic, the American winger taking Borussia Dortmund by storm, is rumored to be on the move and Liverpool are keenly interested, as it was Jurgen Klopp who promoted Pulisic through the ranks to begin with.

But the Gunners would stand to gain so much with the addition of the Yank. He has registered two goals and six assists in 15 appearances for Dortmund and yet he can’t seem to iron himself into the starting XI.

For as solid as Dortmund are, a move to England has to be a tantalizing prospect, as so many American prospects see the Premier League as the promised land, nothing more than far off dream.

Not only that, but there hasn’t been an American, outfield player to truly thrive in England. Tim Howard did it, but he was a keeper. Landon Donovan was close to it, but it’s hard to say that he thrived.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Arsenal in particular have a unique history with American’s in the game of football. It was under Arsene Wenger that they started taking this new land of talent seriously and it was in America that they found Danny Karbassiyoon, the only American to ever score for the Gunners.

And then there is Gedion Zelalem, who is still progressing quite solidly in the youth ranks.

Christian Pulisic can be the big breakthrough that America needs to take that next step into world footballing relevance. The Premier League is the biggest stage and if Pulisic can succeed on it, then that barrier has been destroyed.

Not only that, but Arsenal can always use wide talents. This year in particular has brought out how thin the crop is, especially if Alex Iwobi keeps tanking and Joel Campbell continues to be shunned. Not to mention Alexis moving up front.

Pulisic would be an excellent replacement and it would allow Wenger to spite his critics yet again. What madness it would be to see an American scoring goals at the Emirates?
