Antoine Griezmann is being linked with a move to Manchester United, breaking the many Arsenal hearts who had dreams of seeing him at the Emirates.

The January transfer window is here and with it comes a faint whisper of hope for all Arsenal fans around the globe that maybe, just maybe, there may be a new face in town which lights up every other, well, face.

In the summer, there was a multitude of rumours and reports, some more realistic and believable than others, than aroused hope amid the fanbase. The near-signing of Jamie Vardy, the club’s flirtation with N’Golo Kante, the rejected bid for Alexandre Lacazette. All of these teased, tickling the very sensitive transfer nerve that ever Gooner protects with every ounce of effort.

Nonetheless, Arsene Wenger has shown he is willing to spend, debunking the long-time myth that he was scared to ever do so. Consequently, when such rumours come around, there is a sense of surely-not-but-this-might-actually-happen, not the usual here-we-go-again roll of the eyes that has pervaded the many pubs across North London throughout Wenger’s tenure.

There is one name that his quickened the heartbeat, widened the pupils, salivated the mouth like no other. Like the unattainable, unreachable, ungettable but oh so tantalising girl-next-door, Antoine Griezmann has always been there, magically wafting his wand of a left foot. Wenger himself has heralded his ability on numerous occasions, causing mild uproar among the hopelessly romantic fans that pine for the Frenchman.

However, nothing has ever come of all the talk. Simply rumours. Griezmann remains a pipe dream, a pipe dream that may now be one step further from reality. Recent reports state that Manchester United are heavily interested in the Atletico Madrid star, so much so that they are willing to part with Paul Pogba-esque wages to acquire his scintillating services.

Jose Mourinho, unlike his old adversary, is far more ruthless in the transfer window. He is not hesitant. He is impatient, swooping to catch his prey. He rarely fails. It is easy then, to conceive of Griezmann at Old Trafford, far easier than it is to see him in the red of London, not Manchester.
