Arsenal Transfer Rumors: Wenger Recreating Rob Holding Magic
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal may not need a left back at this very moment, but looking forward, they absolutely do, and if Rob Holding magic can happen once, it can happen again.
There were a lot of groans when Rob Holding was brought in by Arsenal this past summer. The team needed defensive help and they needed it badly. After seeing Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista struggle to maintain a grip on the second center back position, having a true replacement brought in was a necessity.

Wenger seemingly turning to 20 year old Rob Holding was a typical Le Prof move. Let’s get someone cheap who we hope can grow into the role. What could possible go wrong?
Just ask Yaya Sanogo.
However, Rob Holding was soon joined by Shkodran Mustafi even despite the Englishman’s surprising competency at the position. Few expected him to seem so composed and determined in the role of an Arsenal first-teamer but he was. Before being replaced, that is.
Wenger may be trying to replicate that magic by looking for a young’n to be the next great left back.
Left back is a tricky position because on the surface it doesn’t appear to be a great big need. Nacho Monreal is a good defender and Kieran Gibbs has massive upside. That being said, Monreal is getting older and has his limits while Gibbs is an injury machine.
Names like Ricardo Rodriguez and David Alaba have been cruelly thrown about like their are a real option, but Wenger seems to have his eyes set on much more of the “future” and not so much the “solution”.

Names like Ben Chilwell have passed across the radar as potential investments, but they are too close to Premier League relevance, I suppose, as Wenger is digging deeper than that, looking at Cohen Bramall from everyone’s favorite seventh-tier English side Hednesford Town.
The 20 year old impressed on trial with the Gunners before Christmas and looks all set to take the massive leap into the Gunner’s system, where he will play the rest of the season with the U23s.
Even jumping into the U23s is a huge leap, as that is right underneath the Arsenal first team. Surely Wenger has seen something he is quite fond of, as well as something that can be contributing to the first team as early as next season.
Monreal is not going to get any better and Gibbs could feasibly move to another team or suffer more injuries, so cover is much more necessary than it seems on the surface.

If Bramall is the solution, I will never doubt Wenger’s intuition ever again.
