Massimiliano Allegri is being touted as a possible replacement for Arsene Wenger. He would be a viable replacement for Arsenal to pursue.

The long-term future of Arsenal football club is becoming more and more uncertain. With a host of players still waiting for contract offers, others stalling their own current negotiations and a particular long-time manager also without a contract beyond the end of the year, there are most definitely few answers to be found.

While much of the media attention has focused on the drawn own contract discussions with the likes of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez among others, none, however it may seem, have the same influence on the future makeup of the club as the upcoming decision that Arsene Wenger and the club will have to make.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Wenger has been the fore-founder of the modern structure of this club. Hired in 1996, he revolutionised not only Arsenal but the many flawed training and management methods throughout the Premier League. Players’ diets, their focus on fitness, the advancing uses of science, both in honing the athleticism of the players and the statistical derivations that can be made in analysing the tactical success of a particular system, have all been implemented, in part, thanks to the groundbreaking beliefs of Wenger.

Nonetheless, after 20 years in the job, and a title-less run for the past 12, pressure is growing on him to leave, whether be resignation, retirement or sacking. Although it is highly unlikely that the club would ever sack Wenger – I personally believe that the decision of whether he wants to stay or go is Wenger’s alone – his exit would leave Arsenal in a state of great uncertainty. Plans must be made for the unexpected.

As such, over recent years there have been numerous names linked with the role at the Emirates stadium. Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid, Eddie Howe at Bournemouth, even Owen Coyle when he was enjoying great success with a free-flowing Burnley side. The latest name to be rumoured with the role is Massimiliano Allegri and he is an extremely viable option.

Reportedly, he has fallen out with some of the major players in the Juventus dressing room and could be prized away from the Old Lady with a new challenge. With the success that Antonio Conte has had at Chelsea, his predecessor at Juventus and fellow Italian, his lack of experience in the Premier League is perhaps less of a worry – Jurgen Klopp’s enjoyment at Liverpool is another supporting factor, though Pep may have something to say about that – and the formidable squad that he has assembled at Juve goes a long way to supporting his claim.

Allegri has displayed an adept ability to invest cleverly in the transfer window, has developed young players, Paulo Dybala most specifically, even though he was signed for over £25 million he has improved significantly since joining, and is clearly aware and is capable of dealing with the pressures that management at the highest level brings.

Allegri is a tremendous manager and one that would carefully navigate the stormy waters that working for Arsenal in the aftermath of Wenger’s exit would bring. Nevertheless, whether Wenger leaves or not is still unknown but looking to the future is something that this club does very well, and Allegri could become a major figure.
