Arsenal’s defensive schematics are steady bolstering and we have to remember that there are more players returning – like Calum Chambers, who is a Boro stud.

Arsenal recently handed Per Mertesacker a one-year extension, all in the midst of having a foursome of solid center backs to choose from. This is all incredibly promising, given the recent past of having just three centerbacks to rotate between.

I remember the infant days of Mertescielny with an injured Vermaelen rotating in and out. It was a thin and perilous set up that can be happily forgotten. Arsenal is a defender collector now, and we should all be quite elated with this.

Through it all, you could be forgiven for forgetting that Calum Chambers is going to come back. The former Southampton man is spending his time this year at Middlesbrough and he has been rocking it out. Boro has become known as the best defense you’ve never heard of and Chambers is a central piece to that defense.

He has started the majority of games and his maturity is increasing by the minute. At just 21 years of age, it’s looking like he may fulfill the mass of potential that was heaped on him when he first arrived from the Saints.

Wenger clearly had a ton of faith in this young man. It was just a matter of getting that out of him and the Gunners could hardly afford to risk starting him, no matter how strong his potential appeared to be.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

The loan and sub-sequential  irreplaceability he has undergone at Boro is a testament to how close he actually was to being first-team ready. Now, with half a season still to go, Chambers is going to be able to solidify his abilities and his talents and come back to Arsenal in the summer like a veritable wrecking ball.

It’s going to be near impossible to bust up the Kostafi scheme, as Gabriel and Rob Holding are figuring out. But Chambers is going to do his best to reassert himself as the future of the English defense.

It’s going to be quite the interesting scenario to see how Chambers fits in and how Wenger deals with having three different pairings to toy with. It’s hard to imagine holding onto all of them, so a loan move for Rob Holding would seem practical.

Don’t be surprised if Chambers looks like a brand new man, with confidence and the works. I will always point to the time last year where he had to fill in for Koscielny and he stoned both Riyad Mahrezand Jamie Vardy in separate one-on-one situations.
