Arsenal has long been tied to Antoine Griezmann and they likely will be for some time. But making a bid has never made less sense.

Arsenal’s long-established courtship of Antoine Griezmann is becoming a never-ending story to match the likes of Edinson Cavani and Karim Benzema. Which isn’t good because, notice that neither of them is a Gunner.

Still, Griezmann is absolutely the Arsenal type and it’s hard to imagine that Wegner hasn’t at one point or another sent off an offer or two for the Frenchman’s services.

According to reports, Wenger has upstaged Manchester United by offering £85m for the French international.

Normally, when such a report emerges, you could find me here gushing about how realistic that it is and how wonderful that there is an amount attached to it. But that isn’t the case this time around.

This time around I’m going to tell you the opposite. A bid has never seemed less likely than it does right now, as that bid is being reported.

Look what Arsenal just did against Southampton. With Lucas Perez and Danny Welbeck – two strikers – the Gunners tore apart the Saints like soft bread. And these guys are third and fourth on the striking totem pole, in no particular order.

Yet they have never looked better. That means that Wenger has four functioning strikers to play with and all four have different skill sets and uses.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

That’s not something that Le Prof is used to and he is going to maximize the heck out of it. All four are essentially on an equal playing field. I’m not saying that as a slight to Alexis, but the fact that he can play left wing lessens his stock. Chances are, he won’t be playing striker again any time soon, barring a crisis.

So, while I would never not like seeing Griezmann jump on over to the Emirates, it could not feel any less reasonable. The natural inclination is to believe that Griezmann would be an Alexis replacement. But there is still no sign that Alexis is leaving and it’s looking more and more like he is staying.

If Griezmann comes, more of the attackers Wenger has already compiled and owes something to would be out of playing time. There is a constant need to get better, sure, but I’m trying to explain this from Wenger’s point of view and what he has done in the past.
