Arsenal: Danny Welbeck And Joel Campbell Should Go Bowling
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal definitely have a lot of things to answer for after that Bayern defeat. Meanwhile, Danny Welbeck might as well go bowling.
Arsenal needed some sort of savior against Bayern Munich, and against Chelsea and Watford and more. But that savior never came. Not because he wasn’t there, but because he wasn’t used in his full capacity, if at all.

When Danny Welbeck returned from injury, there was pretty unanimous optimism that he was the answer. Even keeping in mind how desperate Gooners can get in times of despair, it was a fairly reasonable assessment. Here was a fantastic athlete with insatiable work ethic who had size, speed, strength and a will to prove himself.
Plus, he had been sidelined for nearly a year. How’s that for extra motivation?
That was nearly a month ago and he still isn’t being used. It brings up comparisons to Joel Campbell.
Campbell was the ultimate frustration. He was finally given a chance (one lowly chance) when injuries sidelined Walcott and the Ox. Campbell did fantastic with his debut in the Premier League and showed tremendous growth and improvement over the course of the year.
He brought something no one else had, which was enough to crave his inclusion. He was an untapped talent that defenses hadn’t gotten a good read on yet, kind of like Lucas.

That never changed. Campbell went all season being shoved to the side and was eventually loaned out to Sporting in Portugal, where he has continued to be a sparkplug.
This is growing into a nasty trend at Arsenal, as Danny Welbeck is now in the same boat. He has done nothing but prove that he is ready for a bigger role, he has been loyal and dedicated to the club and the club has answered with minimal appearances.
Maybe you can claim that he still isn’t fully healed, but I don’t buy that. He’s in full training and busting his arse when he does touch the pitch. He is ready to start.
Bayern would have been the perfect opportunity, but it was not utilized. The same old crew was sent out there.
Danny Welbeck and Joel Campbell, and Lucas Perez too, all share this sad similarity that really needs to be reversed. Whatever happened to rewarding the players that had earned a reward and dropping those who deserved it?
