Arsenal unleashed Danny Welbeck to face Leicester City in the reserve side, excluding him from the FA Cup clash. Be mad. But then see the reason behind it.

I wasn’t alone in being absolutely livid when Danny Welbeck started for Arsenal’s reserve side against Leicester City. I didn’t care about the reasoning, I just wanted to see the beast unleashed and running rampant all over Sutton United. Nothing would have fixed the sickness from that Bayern Munich embarrassment more.

But the longer I sat in my own fury, the more I began to understand. As frustrating as this is, it is the right decision. It is a level-headed decision, something that we can always rely on Arsene Wenger for. He is the crowned prince of level-headedness.

Danny Welbeck did just return from injury and we all want to see him marauding up and down the pitch. We have seen samples of how much pent up energy he has in the substitute appearances he has made, but deep inside all of us, we want to see him starting up front, Alexis at his side.

Even me, and I am the president of the Olivier Giroud fan club.

So yeah, knowing beforehand that we wouldn’t see him (yet again) was annoying.

Welbeck is here for the long term. He is supposed to be a solution for the long haul, a striker to end all striker problems. The comparisons to Thierry Henry (although, who isn’t compared to Henry these days) are not so far off when you look at raw ability.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Welbeck has everything.

So risking a newly-healed knee in a match where he shouldn’t be needed all in the name of vengeance? Yeah, that’s pretty stupid. Especially considering that there are so many other guys that want just as much vengeance and are equally equipped to unleash it.

Like Lucas Perez, who I will talk more about later today.

Welbeck is going to be needed when we actually need him. As we are clawing to make up ground in the title race, as we are up 3-0 against Bayern at home and need that fourth goal, as we are facing top-tier opposition in the FA Cup.

That’s when Welbeck will be needed and that’s when we will use him. But not now. Not on a plastic pitch in Sutton against a non-league side. Just go out there, take care of business, and bring out the beast next time.
