Arsenal didn’t make it as lopsided as we had hoped against Sutton United, but they won and it’s on to the next round. Here are the player ratings.

We all believed Arsenal were going to score a bit more than that, but it was still a confident win. Sutton had a few chances to make it even more nervy but the Gunners were untarnished in the end and that is all we can ask for.

It wasn’t the glorious return to confidence that we were hoping for, either, but it should be a nice result to sit on going into the next round against Lincoln City, which should hopefully play out just like this did.

Here are the player ratings:

DAVID OSPINA. 6.0. Had a real howler of a pass in the first half that should have gifted a goal back to the hosts. Really can’t have that. Didn’t have much else to do. A couple nice punches and claims, but a just iffy overall.. GK. Arsenal

8.8. MAN OF THE MATCH. Very, very active down the right hand side. Solid defensively and, given how boneheaded some of his team mates looked, this was a near perfect performance from the Brazilian. I can’t think of anything he could have done better.. DEF. Arsenal. GABRIEL PAULISTA

DEF. Arsenal. ROB HOLDING. 6.9. Lost at times, but never so loose to lose full control. Shaky on back passes but, again, nothing came back to haunt him. Has a lot of learning before we can fully rely on him. He was composed without the ball though, strong in the air as always.

SHKODRAN MUSTAFI. 7.5. Did everything he had to do. Was hoping to see more of him from set pieces but never really had any great chances. Defensively solid as he had to be.. DEF. Arsenal FC

DEF. Arsenal. NACHO MONREAL. 6.2. Just not good. Not effective going forward, not effective in defense. Arsenal clearly needs a new left back after seeing this. Managed to save some dignity at the end with some solid penetrating runs but between him and Gibbs, I just don’t see it.

MID. Arsenal. MOHAMED ELNENY. 6.6. Solid day that was unfortunately cut short by injury. Came off at half time after a solid, controlled first half. Was also responsible for kicking the ball completely out of Gander Green.

Another daft tackle that just didn’t need to be there but other than that, he had himself a solid outing. Good passing, notched an assist, fun stuff. Solid defensively, strong presence on the ball. Was definitely in his element. Just wish he hadn’t made that tackle.. MID. Arsenal. GRANIT XHAKA. 7.2

Rough. I worry that he is trying to showboat too much while ignoring the fundamentals. Reminded me of Paul Pogba when it goes wrong. Lost the ball and made a Xhaka-style tackle to make up for it. Just sloppy overall. Was hoping to see much better from him.. MID. Arsenal. JEFF REINE-ADELAIDE. 6.1

6.3. I’m fairly certain Alex Iwobi was responsible for killing more Arsenal attacks than then all of the Sutton defenders combined. He is in one hell of a rough patch and I worry that Wenger feels the only way to get him through it is to keep playing him. His passing was all over the place and his ball control just wasn’t there. Missed an excellent chance at a goal too.. MID. Arsenal. ALEX IWOBI

7.8. Not the best, but he notched the sneaky opening goal. Really bad body language and I worry that hen may be looking for an early checkout from this experimental year with the Gunners. Still showed great presence on the ball though. He has so much talent that I hope Wenger will start to to tap into more.. MID. Arsenal. LUCAS PEREZ

Arsenal. THEO WALCOTT. 7.4. Scored his 100th goal to solidify the 2-0 victory. Could have probably had 105 goals by the end of the night if he hadn’t fluffed his lines so many other times. This should have been an easy match for Walcott and it just wasn’t.. ST

Came on for an injured Elneny at half and immediately pushed the envelope. he is so incredibly fast and talented and actually looked head and shoulders over the opposition, unlike anyone else on the Gunner’s side.. SUB. Arsenal. ALEX OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN. 8.1

6.3. Came on in the 74th. Didn’t do much. Clearly wanted to score but it just didn’t come off for him.. SUB. Arsenal. ALEXIS SANCHEZ

Arsenal. AINSLEY MAITLAND-NILES. 6.0. Didn’t see much of him.. SUB
