Arsenal are reportedly set to ask clubs for £50 million for Alexis Sanchez. If they were able to acquire such a fee, then that would be an excellent deal.

It has been disastrous run of form for Arsenal in recent months. After a promising start to the season saw their title hopes inflated, their fight and desire have since been popped into oblivion thanks to a number of underwhelming and lethargic displays.

After the 3-1 loss to West Brom immediately before the international break, Arsene Wenger’s side have now won just three games in their last nine. Of those three, two came against non-league opposition in the FA Cup – Sutton United and then Lincoln City – and the other was a 2-0 win over Hull City at home.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

The aftermath of such a poor run of form has seen Arsenal slip to sixth in the table, ahead of Everton by only goal difference, and now face a six-point deficit to Liverpool in fourth place. Throughout their recent struggles, there has one man that has visibly grown increasingly frustrated with the lacklustre performances of his teammates. Alexis Sanchez is clearly unhappy with life at the Emirates and could well be edging towards a summer exit.

Repeated strops and tantrums like a small child after they’ve been told they can’t have another biscuit have led many to conclude that Sanchez is nearing the end of his Arsenal tenure. And that is a justified belief. With his contract set to expire in the summer of 2018 and talks having been delayed on numerous occasions, primarily thanks to the unwillingness of Sanchez to take a seat at the negotiation table, there is a clear friction between him and the club.

As such, the club must now explore the possibility of looking to recoup as much of the £35 million splashed on his services nearly three years previous. With the prospect of being able to sign him for free just a year later, it could be difficult for Arsenal to convince any potential suitors to part with sufficient funds.

That said, recent reports suggest that the club are looking for £50 million in the hope that the ever increasing competition for his signature will drive up his price tag. If Wenger is able to secure such a fee for Sanchez, then he should jump at the opportunity.

While the Chilean is an excellent player, as proven by his three prosperous years in North London, selling from a position of great weakness, as the Gunners would be, is no enviable task. £50 million would represent successful negotiations indeed.
