Arsenal look to be closing in on another obscure name that way fix anything, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with this approach.

Arsenal don’t have that many massive, gaping needs. Not like they had last summer. But if they want to push for the title, which I’m sure they do, then they seriously need to identify a big time striker to land and perhaps one other player.

So far, while Sead Kolasinac has been a fantastic addition that should be celebrated in excess, the other links have been to Henry Onyekuru, who Arsene Wenger will undoubtedly hope will become a star turned, and now to Russian midfielder Aleksandr Golovin who… Arsene Wenger will undoubtedly hope will become a star turned.

These links are fun to think about – what will happen if they pan out and turn into something special. Oh how great will we look.

And naturally, people are going to be panicking that these are the ‘solutions’ that Wenger has identified. A midfielder and a striker to augment what we already have and that’s that, summer over.

But it’s far too early to panic. For starters, we landed Bundesliga team of the year member Sead Kolasinac. If anything, the route this summer is taking reminds me an awful lot of last summer, and need I remind you of how successful that summer was?

Last summer started with a big signing – Granit Xhaka. It was then followed by two obscure players that no one was that excited about – Rob Holding and Takuma Asano. For a team that needed a striker and a center back, it was assumed that Wenger was doing his normal buffoonery, signing unknowns and hoping they work out.

But those signings turned into Shkodran Mustafi and Lucas Perez by time the window shut. And all in all, what a window it was.

The transfer window hasn’t even opened yet and we already have Kolasinac. Onyekuru and Golovin are rumors and nothing more, but even assuming we land them, it is only cause for more excitement, not dread.

Wenger proved last summer that even while he exercises his obscure signings and scoops up cheap, optimistic players, there is still a wider search for players who carry bigger names and bigger impacts.

Landing Onyekuru and Golovin would be nothing but welcomed. It isn’t a distraction or a forced solution. It’s a start. We will have two months of tracking Kylian Mbappe and Alexandre Lacazette and every other player under the sun.
