Arsenal have a lot of work to do this summer and they are taking their time getting started. Mesut Ozil, among many others, still have yet to sign a damn contract.

Sometimes patience is a good thing. I’d like to think that it was patience that got Arsenal Shkodran Mustafi. I was harping on them to bid for Mats Hummels and a handful of other defenders, but I couldn’t be happier with the one (well, two) that we got. Patience also got us Granit Xhaka.

That being said, right now, patience is not a good thing. There are so many players waiting in limbo, with their contracts expiring in 12 months. That means one of two things. Either there are far too many transfers in the works (going the wrong way) or the club is just taking their sweet time, nickel and diming the player’s parties to try to keep them for as little as possible.

There have been scattered reports that Mesut Ozil and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have agreed to new contracts, or are at the very least in talks, which is fantastic news. Both players have a crucial role to play in the club’s future and Oxlade-Chamberlain in particular has his trajectory shooting upwards.

But nothing is official. It’s two weeks until the transfer window opens and our entire brigade of very important players whose contracts are set to expire in 2018 are still without new contracts, according to the silence by the team. Granted, most players are on vacation and international duty, ready to hammer out contracts when we get farther into the summer, but if they are that intent on staying, why would they wait?

More from Pain in the Arsenal

There are so many questions surrounding this club that the least they could do is give us the reassurance of a contract or two, especially if they are already agreed upon, as the reports indicate.

Mesut Ozil’s would be a massive obstacle out of the way. I also have to believe that with his commitment to the club, given his international star power, many other players would want to stay along as well. Hell, maybe even Alexis Sanchez, who knows.

I get that the club has no obligation to settle their fans nerves. But that doesn’t even factor into it that much. With the number of players out of contract at this point next year, I would have through that at least a couple players would have re-upped their deals by now.

We should be thrilled with the fantastic start to the summer. Sead Kolasinac is a stalwart. But for how much talk there was about players inking new contracts, I would have thought we would be seeing official news by now.
