Arsenal’s fans are demanding a summer of investment that proves their title ambitions. Alexandre Lacazette is a start, but he is not yet enough.

When Arsene Wenger signed a new two-year contract shortly after the remarkable FA Cup final win, Wenger, Stan Kroenke and Ivan Gazidis collectively spouted of Arsenal’s ambitions moving forward, an ambition that included hauling themselves back into the Champions League, challenging for the title and competing with Europe’s elite.

However, such statements have been at the heart of the Arsenal PR department for many years without any action to support such empty, vacant words. There is a lack of integrity to the board, Wenger and the organisation, and the fans are now able to see through the facade.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

There is a demand for the club to back up their statements. And that starts with what they do in the transfer window. While Sead Kolasinac has already been added to the squad this summer, we are still waiting for the big-name, established star that will invigorate and inspire the squad towards a Premier League title and beyond.

The most prominent name that has been linked with a move to North London is Alexandre Lacazette. The Lyon striker has been prolific for a number of seasons and looks set to take his place as the leading centre-forward for Wenger. However, there are some who doubt whether his value will be as significant as many fans hope. French football expert Julien Laurens stated that Lacazette is a good player, but will fall short of firing Arsenal to a Premier League title:

"“If you ask me ‘can he come and take them to the title and in the Champions League and in two years time win the Champions League?’ I think that’s a bit early. If the Arsenal fans wanted someone to win them the Champions League or the Premier League, Lacazette is not ready for that. He’s not ready to be a leader and go straight in and go there and change that team and make them winners again, at least not by himself.”"

While that is an opinion that goes against the grain of the general consensus, and is not one that I necessarily agree with, there is an element of truth to his comments. Lacazette indeed cannot ‘go there and change that team and make them winners again, at least not by himself.’

That is the key point to the addition of Lacazette. He is undoubtedly an improvement on the options already in the squad. But he is not enough to satisfy the demands of the fans that call for the club to act on their ambition.
