Arsenal are supposedly going to sign Karim Benzema if they lose Alexis Sanchez. That is such a stupid concept, but surprisingly, it’s not the worst.

Arsenal’s link to Karim Benzema ended in 2015 when the Frenchman essentially mocked the idea of coming to the Emirates, calling Real Madrid the pinnacle of football. And, seeing as how Benzema has never done anything outside of the greatest team in the world, why would he want to leave?

That’s a risk. It’s a risk that he could flop and prove himself to be a passenger on the Los Blancos Express. He has been put aside by Olivier Giroud at the international level, so please, tell me how Benzema is world class. I dare you.

And now, a story emerges that Arsenal are prepared to sell Alexis Sanchez if it means they can land Benzema. Yes, read that again. Benzema. For Alexis.

Of all of the swap deals I have had to debunk, this has been the dumbest. The two players are so completely different that you might as well swap out your ground beef for mushed peas. It’s okay, it’s pretty much the same thing.

Benzema is a finisher. That’s what he does. That’s it. He isn’t going to work or dribble or pass. He is going to finish. And his goal tallies have been dropping off lately as he passes his prime and in the near future, Madrid will have no further use for him.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Alexis is an everything. He does it all. He hounds the ball, he finishes, he dribbles, he passes. He is better than Benzema. By a long shot.

But that isn’t even where the crux of this stupidity is. Benzema is a strike. Alexis was going to play in behind Alexandre Lacazette. So this story is inferring that Wenger would either drop Lacazette or push him back to where Alexis plays to accommodate Benzema.

Despite the fact that Giroud is better than Benzema, is proven in the Premier League and Wenger hasn’t even shifted the formation as such for him.

This is nonsense. And the only reason it isn’t the dumbest story of the summer is because this link between Inter Milan and Shkodran Mustafi still exists.

Benzema has nothing more to offer Arsenal. At one point I loved the idea, but that was two years ago. A lot happens in two years. Even now, we have been proven right for not signing Benzema back then. We are better off without.
