Arsenal: Bacary Sagna would be just as wasted as Mathieu Debuchy

Arsenal’s right back situation seems pretty set, yet they are linked to Bacary Sagna and Mathieu Debuchy is still here. Why are we wasting time and space?

Arsenal are oddly being linked to a reunion with Bacary Sagna, who, you may remember, swapped the Gunners for Manchester City’s baby blue. But that isn’t even why the link is odd. The link is incredibly odd because we already have Mathieu Debuchy holding onto a spot in the Europa League squad.

I don’t see why people are bashing Debuchy’s inclusion while actually considering reuniting with Sagna. They two are essentially in the same spot and neither would find much game time. Even in spite of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain‘s exit.

Any team spot or money spent on either Debuchy or Sagna is wasted money and a wasted space that could be used on re-upping needed players or giving someone like Reiss Nelson a spot with the first team.

We have been swamped with overpaid veterans for the past decade. Players who, when they get defeated, can’t seem to pick themselves back up. Both Debuchy and Sagna had their moments but they are well past their prime.

Why Debuchy is still with the team is beyond me, which is why it’s even funkier that Sagna would even be considered.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

They don’t belong on a team desperate for a rebuild. Arsenal do not need more dead weight bogging them down. They need to continue to cut that weight and let players who actually want to be there, who actually have some sort of upside, take the reigns.

There are options in the club that may not stand out right away, even beyond Reiss Nelson. Julio Pleguezuelo is a solid option, for instance. Twenty years old, has been defending well with the U23s and has yet to have that opportunity at the next level.

Tafari Moore has shown a good deal of promise and he has that token athleticism that a right wingback needs.

These are the players that should take precedence over 30-somethings that have disappeared from world footballing relevance. Living in the past is what has held Arsene Wenger back, and that’s what we are suggesting with this Sagna link.

Look to the future instead. Because the past has not been kind. There is no sense in pursuing Sagna, just like their is no sense in relying on Debuchy.
