Arsenal certainly need to beef up their midfield and while Adrien Rabiot is a solid option, he is not worthy when compared to the true answer.

Adrien Rabiot, who has long looked like a sensible answer to Arsenal’s midfield fragility, has again commented that he would like to experience something outside of Ligue 1. Which undoubtedly should be followed up on and pursued.

But as a back-up. Now, Wenger is not known for having back-ups to his preferred moves, so it needs to be stated that when I say we need to look at him as a back-up, I still mean go after him now, but hold him in reserve until you can be sure that you cannot land choice No. 1.

I shouldn’t even have to tell you who that No. 1 choice is. As Arsenal so clearly proved with Sead Kolasinac, sometimes the best signings are the ones made for free, and this summer there is an excellent chance to do the exact same thing – solve a huge problem with an elite talent for free. And again from FC Schalke.

There is no midfielder in the world right now who Arsenal should be more keen on landing than Leon Goretzka. The German is on the cusp of absolute brilliance and he is doing it in the Bundelsiga which, no offense to Ligue 1, is much more competitive.

Goretzka is just two months older than Rabiot and he has a wider range of skills, including shooting from set pieces, which will come in handy when Alexis Sanchez is gone.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Speaking of Alexis, in the spirit of recouping our monetary losses from getting zero return from both the Chilean and Mesut Ozil, Goretzka shines as an even brighter option. But to call him an ‘option’ is to infer that there are others that rival him and there simply are not. Goretzka is the best thing the Gunners can do.

If we can’t land him, for whatever inexplicable reason, then it comes time to start exploring the likes of Rabiot. But for now, I don’t care what anyone says other than the German, and you shouldn’t either. He is the everything midfielder with great pace and free kick ability as well. There is no weakness in his game other than a want for more.

If you want to think about paradise, think about replacing Ozil with Goretzka. The sheer jump in effort and athleticism alone would completely blot out whatever gap there is on the creative front. Plus, it provides options. Rabiot is deep midfielder who would jam himself into the mix with Aaron Ramsey and Granit Xhaka, likely pushing Ramsey forward.
