Arsenal is in a perfect position to welcome back Jack Wilshere to a more important role and it sounds like there aren’t many who will disagree with that.

It’s a rare thin when Arsenal supporters are treated to weeks upon weeks of good news regarding Jack Wilshere. Normally it’s a brief splurge of optimism followed by bottomed-out depression. Over and over again, the cycle is vicious.

But ever since he has returned from injury this time around, we have only heard good things. Not a single bad. And all of this with his contract set to expire at the end of the year.

First, it was Wilshere declaring his undying love for the Gunners, then it was Wilshere talking up his own fitness levels and how he has never been healthier, now, it is Arsene Wenger, the man in charge, and his take on Wilshere’s situation. Take it away, Le Prof (as quoted by the Mirror):

"In fact he had a very good game in BATE Borisov, especially a very brilliant first half where he was back to his best, so he’s not far away now. Let’s hope in the next two or three weeks he can play regularly in the first team."

Those were his closing statements. After praising the natural ability of Wilshere and dreading the injuries he has been struck by, Wenger slipped in there at the end the bottom line – Wilshere will be playing more regularly in the first team.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

That’s what we’ve been waiting for, right? With Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil like two super-talented dingleberries that are just hanging around, waiting for their contracts to run out, the pertinence of finding able-bodied replacements before the transfer window even roles around doesn’t need to be restated.

So for Wilshere to get the chance to showcase himself, we can already assume that, should be stay healthy he will be able to slot his name onto the list of potential replacements.

As Wenger himself said, it’s never been about the talent. If healthy, Wilshere can go toe to toe with Alexis and Ozil. It’s always been about health. But since Wenger is so serious about testing out that health and seeing if this is something we can all get behind, we will known sooner rather than later if we can let our prodigal son take the reigns as the contract rebels disappear into the mist.
