Arsenal have been desperate for solutions in the past, but that isn’t the case now. So why are we giving desperation a human form in Arda Turan?

Arsenal may well be losing Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil sooner rather than later. And while some supporters and even some players (Alex Iwobi) are desperate to see them hung onto or, at the very least, properly replaced before they are done away with, the fact of the matter is that their exit does not breed a situation of desperation.

In fact, their departures can even be covered in the short-term (with potential for the long term) by solutions within the club already.

Alexis Sanchez can be covered by Danny Welbeck and Reiss Nelson and Mesut Ozil can be covered by Alex Iwobi and Jack Wilshere. We have seen all four of these guys proving themselves capable of first-team duties.

The reason why Alexis and Ozil are held on a pedestal is because of what they have done in the past, but in the present, they do not have the same influence that they once did.

Which is why I’m so confused why we are even being linked to Arda Turan, the very embodiment of desperation. Turan is the same guy who once shat on the idea of coming to Arsenal, calling them nothing more than a Plan B club.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Words aside, Turan will soon turn 31, he is well past his prime and the only thing that he would provide is a new situation of desperation – a desperation for chances for guys that actually deserve it.

Let me give you that list again – Wilshere, Welbeck, Nelson, Iwobi. All four of these guys just need the window of opportunity to prove themselves because every chance they have had has been an improvement on the last.

Even Welbeck, who many ruled out of the picture, proved to be just as useful as Alexis. You can’t tell me, therefore, that you’d rather see Turan brought in and Welbeck shoved to the side.

And if you want to say depth, I’d say that we have that. Four guys to fill two positions, with opportunities for much more if we move Aaron Ramsey to a forward position or experiment with two strikers.

I don’t see Alexis and Ozil as necessities in need of an equal and opposite reaction in the event of an exit. I see them as time bombs that need to just go off so we can move on with life. And the life that follows should not involve contrived desperation moves like Turan.
