Arsenal had their chance with Lucas Perez, and vice versa, but with rumors that he may return, is it fair to say that he is better off staying in Spain?

Arsene Wenger is all about the convenient, easy approach to filling gaps in the Arsenal team. He always has been. It’s harder to find such solutions these days, but now that he has a web of frustrated stars loaned out, he has created his own network of potential solutions.

Which is where he currently finds himself with Lucas Perez. The Spaniard was brought in last year and proved himself at every waking opportunity, but at every subsequent opportunity, he was stashed away and confined to side competitions.

It was clear that Lucas was not the player that Le Prof wanted, despite the fact that Wenger is the man that makes all the purchases. After an open dialogue in the press between Lucas, his agent, and Wenger, there were several conclusions to be made. For starters, no one was happy about the situation.

Then there was the matter of Wenger feeling sorry for Lucas and, on the other side of things, Lucas feeling incredibly (and justifiably) hard done. Lucas’s agent spoke openly about his client’s unhappiness and about the need to sort out the present situation.

It was just a mess of a situation, and one that didn’t make a whole lot of sense, seeing as how he was exactly the type of signing that Wenger usually loves to have. He was intelligent, linked up play, passed well, and was a superb finisher.

Plus he was cheap and not a “blockbuster” deal.

Now they say Lucas could come back. Which is foolish. If Lucas knows what is good for him, he will stay in Spain and far away from the Emirates.

In the event that Lucas does come back, he will be coming back after the hectic holiday period and he will still be sitting behind Alexandre Lacazette. At the absolute most, assuming he returned tomorrow, he would be playing against Nottingham Forest and maybe Ostersund. I doubt he would suit up against Chelsea in the League Cup.

And this is all assuming Danny Welbeck isn’t preferred. Lucas has played nothing but striker this season in La Liga. He would not find such an easy ride to the striker role at Arsenal.

Not just that, but he is presumably being brought back to cope with the loss of Olivier Giroud, but the Frenchman will be back in early February. What then?

I don’t know why Lucas would try again when he was treated so unfairly previously and the situation now is even more cluttered than it was before, with Lacazette here. For that reason, I hope he stays in Spain.
