Arsenal fans want a big name to fix the defense, but Sven Mislintat’s line of credit suggests otherwise – Caglar Soyuncu is a completely viable solution.

After surrendering a record-high 51 goals, Arsenal fans demand answers. This is just unacceptable on every single level. A team at this tier should be nowhere near that mark. The blame game is expansive and leaves nearly every defender as the culprit, which means that this summer, the defense has to be solved.

Naturally, a lot of fans want to break the bank on some top-tier, world class talent, like Liverpool did with Virgil van Dijk. Which is one potential solution. But the other solution is to trust Sven Mislintat to do his thing – the same thing that brought us Konstantinos Mavropanos – and identify a different, long-term solution.

Enter Caglar Soyuncu. The 21-year-old Turkish defender is apparently a huge favorite of Mislintat, and as such, is heavily linked to being a potential solution for the Gunners.

I can hear people complaining already about his age. Relying on a 21-year-old to pair with our three other young defenders of 23, 22 and 20, respectively, may not seem on the surface, like the best possible solution. But you also have to remember Shkodran Mustafi, who we should not be losing faith in just yet.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

Soyuncu has been the anchor of Bundesliga 2’s Freiberg this year, proving himself an intelligent, hulking defender with a penchant for patrolling the passing lanes and reading opposing attacks. He would fir so well into the would-be quadruplets of young, talented defenders and, as we have seen from all three of the current denizens of that circle – they are not that far off.

Calum Chambers is already ready for Premier League regularity. Mavropanos isn’t far off himself and Rob Holding just needs a bit more development.

What this really comes down to is do we trust Sven Mislintat? He surely has a line of credit with his transfer recommendations and, as of yet, we have no reason to cut off that line of credit. He has been fantastic in his capacity. Mavropanos alone would be enough to have us thrilled, but seeing what he did at Dortmund, and the constant flow of young talent that soon turned elite, there is so much more to come.

You can be forgiven for not knowing much about Soyuncu. I haven’t watched him enough to know too terribly much about him. But if Mislintat believes the guy is worth a first-team fee of £35m, then I believe it too. And I will always opt for a young defender over and old one.
