Arsenal are inching closer to landing Caglar Soyuncu for a massive fee, but while this move should be exciting, the questions can’t be ignored.

I just spent a good deal of time writing about how I accept and am actually really excited about Arsenal’s newfound need to really “uncover” off-the-radar talents, seeing as how they don’t have Arsene Wenger or Champions League football to lure the top-tier players they need.

They have to cling to the stars that they have and do their best to uncover other potential stars until they can get back to the heights they belong at.

That means that Caglar Soyuncu should be welcomed, embraced, even celebrated. And I don’t see why he wouldn’t be. We all should trust Sven Mislintat, especially after Konstantinos Mavropanos, a “Mislintat man” proved to be much more advanced than we, and even Wenger, thought.

Soyuncu is another Mislintat man who is, conceivably, further along than Mavropanos. This is all well and good. Coupled with that Soyuncu has admitted that talks are ongoing.

But that won’t stymie the questions. Questions such as just how his £35m price tag is verified. That is, unless he is going to walk right into the starting XI and dominate from the start. I don’t see how we can realistically expect that though, even if that’s what his price tag indicates.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

That’s the exact same amount we paid for Shkodran Mustafi two summers ago and he may be on the out as well. Meaning that it’s possible that the Gunners will have spent £70m on centerbacks, without ever having found a solution.

Of course, I’m getting ahead of myself, because Soyuncu could be the chosen one.

Which leads into my next question, and the subject of this article – who is Soyuncu supposed to be better than? Again, judging on the implications of his price tag, Soyuncu is conceivably supposed to be the best centerback on the team.

Or, at the very least, he is supposed to unseat Calum Chambers, Rob Holding and Mavropanos all in one fell swoop. For that price, he should be starting or, at the very least, right on the cusp.

Yet, for as excited as I am to see what he can do, I can’t help but have my doubts that he is going to be buried for at least his first year, at which point we may have to wonder why the money was spent in the first place.

This is all speculation, but it’s a situation that I want to see avoided. This is all blind faith being placed in Mislintat, especially if that fee is paid.
