21. David Ospina

It was Gary Neville who put the nail in David Ospina’s coffin. The EFL Cup final against Manchester City. Ospina was starting in goal. He didn’t look especially convincing. Neville, quite simply, said that he ‘makes me nervous’. That is the word to summarise Ospina’s season: nervous.

He was far from convincing in the Europa League games that he played earlier in the season, he seemed to develop a peculiar confidence with the ball at his feet, that often put his teammates in positions that didn’t help them, and he made his customary errors from crosses and set pieces.

Ospina is not a bad player. And he did not have a bad season, per se. But he makes me nervous. In fact, he makes everybody nervous, even his teammates, and that is the most damning of indictments for any goalkeeper.
