Arsenal have been using the World Cup to get a feel for potential winger transfers, and finally that has brought about Hirving Lozano.

Arsenal, like every other team in the world, is using the World Cup to scout out potential solutions to their few remaining deficiencies. We have already seen Cristian Pavon pop up as a potential winger option, but now we are getting another young World Cup star – Hirving Lozano.

It was just a few days ago that I was asked on Twitter what I thought of Lozano and, lo and behold, I didn’t know much about him.

So, I did some homework, with my favorite assignment being watching Lozano play in the World Cup, because what a joy he is to watch.

Lozano does a lot of things well – a lot of things that wingers should do well. But what stands out from this young man is his insatiable world ethic.

Lozano scored against Germany and assisted against South Korea, fitting seamlessly into a potent Mexican attack, but it’s his willingness to track back and do the dirty work that makes him look truly special.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

He averaged three ball-winning plays per appearance in the World Cup, which is obviously on the high side for an attacker.

Lozano is just 22-years-old and he fired home 19 goals and eight assists in the Erividisie last season, which should have already landed him on many team’s radars, so it’s about time that the links are popping up, tying him to a move to the Emirates.

The only real drawback to Lozano is his ball control, as he is more than a bit loose in possession (he surrendered the ball four times per game in the Netherlands), but this is part of the territory for wingers and it’s definitely something that can be improved on.

The problem that arises – which is the problem that always seems to arise – is price. Lozano is under contract with PSV Eindhoven until 2023, which makes his already steep price tag even steeper. His World Cup performances are only going to pad that.

Optimistically, he may cost £30m. Pessimistically, that may be nowhere near enough to snatch him away when he is locked into such a long-term deal.

Whatever the case, this young man has a lot to give, and there are far worse ways to spend the club’s hard-earned money than on him. A bit of cleaning up around the edges of his game and you’ve got someone special.
