Arsenal’s midfield is stocked perfectly, but now Mato Kovacic has popped up on the radar and we have to ask other questions along with the rumor itself.

Arsenal’s midfield is a beautiful thing right now. It feels like a game of Tetris, when you’ve been saving for that long, four blocker and you finally get it and it fits in and you’re about to get a quadruple line.

But then the game just stops, because you’ve reached Tetris nirvana. Everything is perfect.

That is where this midfield currently stands. On paper, at least. Everything fits so snugly, we have an answer for every question, a person for every position, and there is such depth that I’m looking forward to the back-ups as much as the starters.

Enter Mateo Kovacic. Once thought of as the next great midfielder, the Croatian has fallen down the pecking order at Real Madrid and, subsequently, with the on-charging Croatian national team as well.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

All that potential has seeped away and what remains is a player in need of a fresh start. It’s just another example of a player making that leap to what Karim Benzema calls the “pinnacle” of world football, and then proceeds to disappear, buried in a competitive body of players, all of whom have tons of talent and just as much ambition, if not more.

Arsenal have emerged as potential suitors to Kovacic, though I’m not entirely why, unless I want to go down the road of worst case scenarios where I have to think about who may be leaving, which I’d rather not do, because we all know who I’m talking about and I refuse to say his name (that was a run-on sentence, forgive me).

That said, giving new life to a player with the potential of Kovacic is rarely a bad idea, even in the diminishing position he is currently in. In fact, it may be better now than ever, because he will obviously be quite grateful for the opportunity and his price won’t get much lower.

But again, this is incredibly speculative, as we don’t know how he would fit in. If someone were to leave, then I would be more than happy to take a gamble with Kovacic.

The potential reward is massive and when you’re dealing with an unexpected exit, sometimes a roll of the dice is the best way to address the situation.
