Arsenal: Domagoj Vida doesn’t fit summer’s theme
By Josh Sippie
Arsenal’s defense probably doesn’t need any more overhauls, yet Domagoj Vida is being talked about. Sounds nice, but doesn’t fit the theme.
Arsenal‘s defense was so obviously the problem going into the summer, that I think you’d have easily found a near-unanimous decision among fans, if you’d have asked the one area that needs improvement.
That’s why three of the four summer signings have been directly related to the defense, and the four, Lucas Torreira, is pretty heavily tied to helping the defense out as well. They were indirect changes, more or less, and that’s what has a lot of people still chirping about new centerbacks to purchase.
Ray Parlour expressed an interest in Giorgio Chiellini, who has the experience to whip this defense into shape, as well as the demeanor. That much is for sure.

But there is also another name emerging. Another World Cup name, which means he carries all the hype in the world.
He’s another Croatian – Domagoj Vida. But as we saw with the other Croatian, Ante Rebic, all teams in possession of one of the checkered crew are demanding a rather hefty fee for their prized possessions.

Besiktas have reportedly already turned down a bid in the £20m range, which, for a 29-year-old centerback without a lot of exposure prior to the World Cup, is one hell of a stance to take. But they know what they can get for him,
And that is why he won’t come to Arsenal.
The Gunners already spend £17m on Sokratis. The Greek defender is our solution. He is going to be the rock and whoever is next to him will roll, and if they don’t roll, they’ll get rolled over by the next guy. So on and so forth. That’s how it’s going to work.
Vida, while he is a firecracker with enough intensity to make small towns quiver, does not fit with the theme of frugality an practicality that has been set by this summer transfer window. Each and every move has been sensible and well-thought out. Not that Vida wouldn’t be, but he would be excess.
And this summer has absolutely not been excessive either.
So while I love the idea of loading up on no-nonsense, bullish Croatians, this is not one that is worth investing much hope in.

That said, I would still love to see Ante Rebic at the club, even if it costs a small fortune.
