Arsenal: £6m can’t be the difference between solutions and dealbreakers

Arsenal’s funds this summer are supposed to be limited, but not so limited that £6m is a dealbreaker when it could be a solution.

There has been plenty to talk about this summer thus far, but perhaps the most exciting (speaking for myself) is Arsenal‘s link to the double deal of Dennis Praet and Joachim Andersen. The initial bid was rejected, which led to what many would say would be an accepted bid of £44m.

Stop right there, because £44m for a 25-year-old, versatile midfielder entering his prime years, with a rapport with Lucas Torreira; and a 22-year-old, physical defender with intelligence and the passing chops of a midfielder, is a steal. It’s a complete steal. I didn’t know how we could be getting so fortunate that this duo would only cost that much.

Apparently, despite what the hearsay was, that bid was not enough, and Sampdoria are still holding out for an additional £6m to take the double swoop up to £50m.

Okay, great. £50m is still a steal for what we’re getting. Think of it like spending £25m on a defender who looks to be a premier solution, and spending £25m on a versatile midfielder who can provide added depth and potentially become more of an attacking presence.

More from Pain in the Arsenal

What might give people pause is the reported limited funds that the Gunners are going to have available this summer, where £6m can honestly seem like a crippling addition when there are already going to be so little available to them, but if that’s the difference between solving a problem and going of in search of another solution, then this is going to be a stressful summer.

That said, the transfer folks here at the club have shown then willingness to get back into the ring and send out new offers when one gets declined. Maybe they have a cap for each arena, for how much they will spend on a particular player, but if these two players were good enough to be worth £44m, then they are absolutely good enough to be worth £50m, and I don’t see how anyone could argue that point. At the end of the day, it is a small number and one that should be easily overcome.

Think of it this way – how peeved would you be if we didn’t get the deal done because £6m proved insurmountable? Thankfully, something tells me that it won’t.
