1. Mario Gotze

I remember when Mario Gotze was one of the hottest youngsters in world football five or six years ago after scoring the winner in the World Cup final. Unfortunately, since then his career has nose-dived due to injuries and inconsistencies and its fair to say he hasn’t reached his potential.

It’s mad when you consider he’s only 27 and given our previous interest in Gotze, I would have thought we would have registered a firmer interest in him when he’s available on a free transfer and our need for a new No. 10.

Like Ryan Fraser, any potential signing for Gotze would be low risk, high reward although he is likely to command higher wages than many of the players this summer.

In signing Mario Gotze, we would be getting a player who can play anywhere across the front three and has shown at Dortmund that he can adapt in a false 9 role, a position he thrived in at Dortmund last season as a perfect partner for the more prolific Paco Alcacer.

Although we wouldn’t be getting a player who is as exciting as he used to be, we could still be getting a player who could make an impact in the Premier League. While I’m not saying Gotze should be a regular starter at the club, he’s certainly someone we should consider as a backup.
