Arsenal vs Leeds: 4 talking points as Aubameyang scores hat-trick
Arsenal Make Dominance Count
An issue that has been at the forefront of so much disappointment this season has been Arsenal not taking advantage of their dominance. This writer has complained extensively about it, so seeing the side convert dangerous possession into goals was among the most pleasing aspects.
While these periods may not have always carved open clear-cut chances in the past, they nonetheless have gone to waste. Earlier in the season, like at Goodison Park, Arteta was left unhappy with the ‘domination’ his side had without converting. This is entirely different since the openings made are organic and premeditated, unlike previously where opposition mistakes and hit-and-hope crossing were on the agenda.
Actually capitalising on these moments is what was so desperately craved, so Sunday was hugely enjoyable for that reason alone. Arsenal only had five shots on target, but they made them count.
This niggling issue has been the root of much evil under Arteta, even away at Wolves where the two goals should have been four, while in the defeat to Aston Villa, specifically in the second half, Arsenal carved open the Villans on numerous occasions only to falter at the final hurdle.
In European football against a Benfica side who’ve only conceded 16 goals in their 18 Liga NOS matches this season, there is no place for complacency.
