Midfielders

Thomas Partey (CM) – If all went well, Partey would’ve played no part in the Europa League. The woeful decision making on the ball from that area of the park forced Arteta’s hand.

Still miles away from where he can be, Partey’s class on the ball makes him a shoo-in to start. There is a surprising amount of sloppiness in possession from the Ghanaian of late, the like rarely seen with him, suggesting once more that he isn’t fit enough yet. Still, 65% Partey trumps every other option.

Granit Xhaka (CM) – The Switzerland captain needs a rest. He won’t be getting it here, though. This will be game number 14 for the midfielder in succession where he will once again likely play 90 minutes, simply because there are no other options.

There isn’t anyone else who can come in. At least not without having supporters chewing their fingernails off. It is a lot to ask, but Arteta will need one more full showing from Granit Xhaka.

Martin Odegaard (AM) – He’s now a certified starter. One need only look at the overall performance of the team after the Norwegian came on to see what a difference he can make.

A divine first touch is met with equally measured caresses of the ball afterwards, and his vision and intelligence in the right half-space enhances the partnerships all down the right flank. His fellow Real Madrid loanee demonstrated rashness on the ball, none of which was evident when Odegaard came on. His work-rate is immense and his pressing fierce. No brainer.
