Football is coming home. At least statistically, somewhat, since a decent chunk of the games are being played in England, but the sentiment remains. For English Arsenal supporters, the biggest cheer yet may come in the form of Bukayo Saka’s potential start against Czech Republic.

The Three Lions’ campaign thus far has been two very contrasting matches. Beating the 2018 World Cup finalists was followed by a miserable performance against an impressive Scotland side, one where Kieran Tierney played a starring role.

Two clean sheets though, right? While there is sure to be more obscene transfer rumours to filter through into the media before, during and after Tuesday’s final group game for England, the spotlight turns to Wembley where Arsenal’s Player of the Season looks set for his Euro 2020 bow.

It’s desperately unfortunate circumstances for Mason Mount that have boosted Saka’s chances of featuring in some capacity against the Czech Republic. Having been deemed to have been in close contact with Billy Gilmour, who tested positive for COVID-19, the Chelsea midfielder will have to sit out on Tuesday and likely the same for whoever England face in the knockout stages.

While there is still a wealth of talent to choose from, The Times report that Saka is under consideration to start against Jaroslav Šilhavý’s men. Phil Foden is set to be rested having started the previous two matches with qualification, in whatever capacity, already confirmed and Jack Grealish is set to be the man to replace the unavailable Mount.

Nothing is set in stone regarding Saka’s involvement but it’s likely he will play some part regardless, and if starting will be keeping Jadon Sancho out of the team.

Supporters love Saka. Rival supporters love Saka. Reminiscent of when Ainsley Maitland-Niles made his Three Lions debut against Denmark, the rush of pride is uncontrollable. Knowing about their development through the ranks and seeing their early steps into Arsenal seniority makes the occasion all the more special.

With Saka, seeing him take to the turf in an England shirt at a major international tournament is set to be a moment to savour, and one of many to come in the future.

If we’re being ‘unbiased’, how Sancho is still being exempt from the lineups is baffling considering his outrageous talent, and on ability alone he should be ahead of Saka in the pecking order.

But to hell with that. If Saka starts he’ll darn well deserve it and knowing full well it will be a masterful performance from him – as ever – he may be the one there making the difference in the last 16 en route to bringing it home.

dark. Next. Calvert-Lewin on the carpet?

Because with him in the side there is no doubt, is there?
