Arsenal: 4 things we’d like to see vs Burnley
4. Aaron Ramsdale Owning His Penalty Box
Bernd Leno hasn’t been vocal or commanding enough to truly own his penalty box every week. He often looks like the tenant, not the landlord.
Ramsdale’s vocality and constant communication have arguably been his standout quality so far in his short time at the club, and were Arteta’s preferred areas of praise after his league debut against Norwich.
Crosses will flying into the area on Saturday and we’ll learn a lot about Ramsdale’s mental state and confidence on how he reacts to the first of those deliveries. A bellow of ‘mine’ and a strong two-handed claim can, in goalkeeping terms, be the equivalent of a hefty challenge from a central midfielder to let the opposition know that this won’t be an easy ride.
If it’s a cautious punch away when the catch is on then the nerves will seep into the rest of the back four. Goalkeepers can’t grow into games, they have to be switched on from minute one.
What Arteta, the supporters and the defence want to see is Ramsdale taking control of his area, coming off his line at the right time (a goalkeeper coming off his line at all would be a welcome change) and being a vocal presence throughout.
Putting him in against Norwich was a wise call from Arteta so long as he selects him here, as even those 90 mostly uneventful minutes will put him in good stead for a different affair entirely.
