Arsenal News: Eddie Nketiah deal set to be announced soon
By Adam Schultz
Eddie Nketiah will sign a new deal with the Gunners after running down his current contract, and according to Ryan Taylor of The Express, the announcement is coming soon.
It has been a rather curious couple of months for Eddie Nketiah at Arsenal. Seemingly on the way out of the Emirates exit door, to then getting a chance to impress Mikel Arteta against Chelsea (which he did with two well-taken goals), the 23-year-old never looked back and displaced Alexandre Lacazette rather easily.
It was widely thought that the 23-year-old would look for greener pastures as he ran down his contract. But the late-season game time, coupled with his excellent form, has seen him make a U-turn on his decision to reject previous terms from the club.
Nketiah scored ten goals in all competitions for Arsenal this past season. Five came in the league during a superb spell that saw him lead the line with aplomb as Arsenal narrowly missed out on Champions League football. Five goals in his last seven games signalled that perhaps the 23-year-old had finally turned a corner and was ready to lead the line for the club.
While not a bonafide starter just yet, Nketiah will be a superb depth player for the Gunners next season, especially with Arsenal competing in the Europa League.
It is an intelligent piece of business for the Gunners to tie down Nketiah to a new deal, although some are questioning whether he warrants the reported wage increase. According to The Express, Nketiah has agreed to a new long-term extension worth £100,000-a-week. That’d put him alongside Bernd Leno and Granit Xhaka as the joint-sixth highest-earner at the club.
Eddie Nketiah’s contract extension will be announced soon
So why hasn’t the club announced his new deal yet? One would have thought that when the terms had been agreed upon, and the length of the deal was set, it would all get wrapped up rather quickly. But that hasn’t been the case.
However, Ryan Taylor spoke to GiveMeSport and stated that Nketiah’s new deal will be announced in the coming days.
"“When that announcement came out, I firmed it up with a source that Arsenal are still planning to announce his contract in the coming days, is how it was put to me,” Taylor said."
"“So, Nketiah is staying, 100 per cent. I don’t know when it will be announced, but Arsenal are waiting, it’s in their hands as to when they want to announce it.”"
It is good news that the deal will be announced soon. With Brazilian Marquinhos signing and Nketiah’s contract set to be confirmed sooner rather than later, it is hoped that Arsenal’s other transfer business gets done a tad quicker.
But there is no doubting that Eddie Nketiah deserves his new contract and will provide plenty of good moments for the club next season.
