Arsenal could yet complete more business with Marseille as the French club are keen to sign Gunners left-back Nuno Tavares on loan.

Tavares joined Arsenal from Benfica last summer before embarking on a mixed (at best) debut campaign which manifested both his talent and distinct flaws. The 22-year-old made 22 Premier League appearances with Kieran Tierney’s injury woes handing the young left-back plenty of opportunities to impress.

And while Tavares still has room to grow, his talent is incredibly raw and the club are open to loaning him out this summer. However, his departure will depend on whether a replacement can be brought in to provide cover for Tierney. Ajax’s Lisandro Martinez is a priority target.

Marseille keen to sign Nuno Tavares on loan this summer

Both Matteo Guendouzi and William Saliba have enjoyed prosperous loan spells at Marseille, with the former signing permanently this summer. Thus, it appears the Gunners have a healthy relationship with Les Olympiens and the two clubs could yet conduct more business together.

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Marseille are interested in signing Nuno Tavares on loan. It’s believed that Arsenal will sanction a sale if ample cover for the perpetually injured Tierney is brought in with the club’s interest in Argentine Martinez said to be strong.

If Arsenal can get that deal over the line, with Ajax demanding upwards of €40m, then it’s likely we’ll see Tavares depart this summer. An option to buy could also be included in the loan deal.

It’d be a brilliant move for the Portuguese full-back, who needs minutes and time to mature at the highest level. Moreover, Tavares should thrive under high-octane coach Jorge Sampaoli, who encourages his full-backs to stretch the pitch and contribute in the final third. The former Benfica defender excelled at times from an attacking perspective last season, but requires serious refinement in the defensive phase.

Hopefully, Sampaoli can nurture the talented Tavares and aid his development.
