Arsenal’s summer transfer window has seen three incomings already. Marquinhos, Fabio Vieira and Matt Turner have joined the London club, while Gabriel Jesus’ arrival is imminent. Not to be ignored, however, are outgoings.

Players leaving the club help the backroom staff clear salaries off the books while bringing in important transfer or loan fees to then help bring in the club’s desired targets. With the expensive profiles of players that Arsenal are looking into, every penny counts.

The current squad does not boast a significant number of peripheral players that can also fetch significant fees. Yet Mikel Arteta is not one to let his squad stagnate.

There has rarely been a player at Arsenal as polarising as Nuno Tavares. Moving from Benfica in an extremely inexpensive deal, he clearly possesses quality. His physicality is a sight to behold and has allowed him to adjust quickly to England’s top flight. Great strength and exceptional speed impress under a deceptively slight frame. His strengths do not stop there.

Tavares’ best work comes in the opposition half and, more often than not, directly in the final third. His delivery from the left flank is excellent, with his left foot able to drive in and loft any type of cross. Equally confident off both feet, he boasts ambipedality, a key attribute of the full-backs under Arteta. Despite his attacking brilliance and physical talents, his weaknesses come to the fore too often.

Tavares’ difficulties lie on the other side as compared to his strengths; the mental part of his game let him down last season. Frequently losing focus, not tracking runners and losing concentration when in possession were sources of frustration among supporters.

However, the left-back is only 22 years old. He has barely played in the top flight, even in Portugal. A loan move would suit the former Benfica man best. Being able to develop and gain experience and ability in the defensive side of the game away from the bright lights and harsh criticism in England would only benefit the youngster.
