Arsenal have confirmed the departure of Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torreira to Turkish giants Galatasaray.

Torreira’s exit was inevitable this summer, but his situation was complicated by Fiorentina failing to buy the Arsenal man outright following his impressive loan spell in Florence last season.

The 26-year-old has never truly been a part of Mikel Arteta’s plans after the Spaniard succeeded Unai Emery as boss back in December 2019.

Various clubs were interested in acquiring Torreira this summer, including Valencia, but Arsenal agreed a £7.5m deal with Galatasaray for the midfielder’s services last week and they’ve since confirmed the player’s departure to the Turkish giants.

An official statement read: “Midfielder Lucas Torreira has joined Turkish Super Lig side Galatasaray in a permanent transfer.

“The Uruguayan international made 89 appearances for us after joining from Sampdoria in July 2018. He was part of our FA Cup final match-winning squad in 2020 and his goal in the 4-2 north London derby win at Emirates Stadium in November 2018 was a notable highlight during his first season with us.”

Torreira certainly peaked early in north London and once Arteta took over as manager, his days at the club were numbered. He’s spent the last two seasons out on loan at Atletico Madrid and Fiorentina, with Arteta never having the intention to reintegrate the Uruguayan back into his first-team squad.

“Everyone at Arsenal thanks Lucas for his contribution during his time with us. We wish Lucas and his family the best of health and happiness in their new chapter with Galatasaray,” the club concluded their statement.

Torreira is one of the few outgoings the Gunners are hoping to complete in the next couple of weeks. Pablo Mari and Hector Bellerin are also linked with moves away.

Supporters are hopeful that once these players are shifted out, the club will once again focus on incomings with a midfielder and winger likely targets.
