Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is not optimistic over the injury picked up by winger Reiss Nelson in training, saying it’s “bad news”.

The Gunners appeared to be heading into Saturday’s Premier League clash against Leicester with a clean bill of health following the returns of Fabio Vieira, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Emile Smith Rowe to full fitness.

Speaking on the aforementioned trio in his pre-match press conference, Arteta said: “They’ve been reintegrated into training this week all of them. Some of them will be in the squad tomorrow.”

The Spaniard also said that Kieran Tierney, who missed much of pre-season with a knee injury, is in “perfect condition” but he’s unlikely to usurp Oleksandr Zinchenko in the starting XI.

However, it’s not all bright and rosy on the injury front at London Colney. Concerns over Nelson’s fitness arose in the week as he captioned an Instagram story “Back soon”, suggesting that he had picked up some sort of injury.

James Benge then reported on Thursday that the winger had indeed sustained a quad injury and is expected to miss a couple of months as a result.

Arteta confirmed Nelson’s issue on Friday: “He felt something in training and the doctor came with bad news. Hopefully, he will be back soon.”

The boss didn’t put a timescale on the winger’s return, but it does seem that he’ll be out of action for a prolonged period at what is a pivotal time in his Arsenal career. Nelson didn’t appear to be on the transfer list this summer, but I’m sure the Gunners would’ve sold the 22-year-old had a suitable offer come in.

Nelson’s stock has dwindled in recent years having initially shown signs of promise at a senior level. The former England Under-21 international has registered just eight goal contributions in 48 appearances for the club, while only one of these came in the Premier League.

The 22-year-old has been usurped by the likes of Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka in the depth chart, and this injury has only set Nelson back further.
