Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has said that Emile Smith Rowe has been dealing with an injury for quite some time and he has not made the trip to Switzerland for the Gunners’ Europa League opener against FC Zurich.

Smith Rowe missed much of pre-season due to injury and he’s yet to make a start for the club this season, appearing four times off the bench.

He played 16 minutes as a substitute against Manchester United last weekend but reports surfaced of the England international pulling up in the warm-down before returning to the dressing room.

As a result, he has not made the trip to Switzerland.

Ahead of Arsenal’s Europa League opener against FC Zurich, Arteta provided a fitness update on Smith Rowe.

“He felt discomfort in an area that [he’s been dealing with] now for a few weeks. He wasn’t comfortable after the game and he hasn’t trained in the last few days, so he’s out of the squad,” the Spaniard said.

There’s a lot of ambiguity over what the actual problem is, but it’s certainly preventing Smith Rowe from reaching the impressive heights he reached during the first half of last season.

The 22-year-old isn’t the only player Arteta will be without on Thursday, with the likes of Thomas Partey, Mohamed Elneny and Reiss Nelson still sidelined. Cedric Soares has also been added to the injury list and is unlikely to feature against Zurich.

“We don’t have that many players available, unfortunately, with injuries we’ve picked up in the last two weeks,” the boss added. “This is a competition that we want to take very seriously, against an opponent that is going to make life difficult for us. We want to start the competition the right way and maintain our momentum.”

Despite Arsenal’s injury woes, the Gunners should have enough against a side that is winless through seven games in the Swiss Super League and without their two leading scorers from last season.
