Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has given an update on the contract situations of three players crucial to the club’s long-term future.

Players and signing new contracts haven’t been Arsenal’s strong suit over the last couple of years. Contract negotiations and Arsenal, in the same sentence, are rarely a good thing; from allowing star players to inexplicably run down their deals into the final year or severely overpaying stars to stay.

This is again in the news as young trio Bukayo Saka, William Saliba, and Gabriel Martinelli are all in line for new contracts with the club. While all three still have two years left on their current deals, the club wants to get out in front of any potential suitors and lock away their futures.

Arteta recently spoke via Football365.com and said that the club is planning for the future and that when he has something to announce, he will.

"“Obviously we have to plan for the future and we are all working on it,” Arteta said.“Obviously Edu is on top of it and all the board and we will try to do things in the right way, being fair and trying to plan the best possible way and reward the players that in our opinion have a big future for the club.“At the moment we have something to announce, we will do that.“We will try to do the same thing and make sure that the club is always protected, that the club is always in a good position to move forward and the players are happy to be at the club.”"

A new era is being ushered in at the Emirates under the Spaniard, who is not afraid to pull rank on star players (Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang spring to mind). There are no longer the astronomical wages that tied a noose around the club’s neck anymore. Most of the players on the outer have either been sold or loaned out as their contracts run down.

Now, the time has come to solidify the club’s future, starting with Saliba, Saka, and Martinelli. Will all three be at the club for the next decade? All Gunners fans hope so, and they hope that their impending deals are announced sooner rather than later.

The longer the season goes without any of the trio signing, the more problematic it becomes. This is why Champions League football is so crucial for Arsenal this season. To give all three that carrot.
This is a big year for the Arsenal Football Club, both on and off the pitch.
