3 standout players from narrow win away at Leeds
By Krish Ajmani
1. Aaron Ramsdale
Aaron Ramsdale was quietly one of the most impactful signings at the club in recent years. Coming in with countless criticisms and questions over his ability, he quickly hushed the talk surrounding his game. His short passing and technical quality have been transformative to the way Arsenal build play from the back and his long balls have been an equally useful asset.
Yet despite his ability on the ball, there were questions about his shot-stopping.
Ramsdale produced several eye-catching moments last season. His double save against Leicester City comes to mind. With Arteta implementing a more front-footed approach, any mistakes made by Ramsdale were immediately thrust into the spotlight. He did not seem fully comfortable in one-on-one situations. Against Leeds, he dispelled any doubt over his quality when facing down the opposition.
Leeds pressed energetically and the frantic atmosphere led to the Whites getting in behind on several occasions. However, Ramsdale was equal to everything Leeds threw at him. From reflex saves to strong punches from set pieces to astonishing one-on-one saves, the keeper impressed in every aspect of his performance. He absolutely deserved the clean sheet he gave everything for. Well done.
Arsenal have been in control every game this season yet Leeds proved to be an incredibly difficult test. This win confirms everything that has been said and felt by fans; this is a new team. While the players on the pitch have changed with each window, so has the mentality, albeit in a less visible way. Both players and mentality will be crucial as Arsenal look to re-establish themselves as a club challenging for England’s and Europe’s highest honours.
