Arsenal have triggered clauses in the contracts of both William Saliba and Charlie Patino which will extend their respective stays in north London by another year.

The Gunners have work to do on the contract front in 2023 as they seek to tie down Saliba, Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka to long-term extensions.

While a new deal isn’t believed to be at the forefront of Saka’s mind, reports emerged over the festive period of an agreement potentially being struck with Martinelli in the new year that’d make him one of Arsenal’s highest-paid players.

The Premier League leaders are hopeful of locking down star defender Saliba for the long haul because his talent wouldn’t have gone unnoticed by Europe’s elite. Fabrizio Romano reports that the Frenchman’s deal now expires in June 2024 after the club triggered a clause in the defender’s contract.

Saliba has proved to be nothing short of revelatory at the heart of Arsenal’s defence this season and he has the potential to be a cornerstone of Mikel Arteta’s hugely exciting project in north London.

Patino is another prospect that could blossom under Arteta’s stewardship further down the line. The dynamic midfielder is currently out on loan at Blackpool where he’s made 19 Championship appearances. Patino struggled with an ankle injury at the start of his loan spell, but he’s come into his own as of late and manager Michael Appleton was full of praise for the 19-year-old just before Christmas.

“He’s certainly developed already in a short space of time,” he said.

“There are parts of his game that people probably questioned – even at a very young age – whether he could cope with it, and obviously the physicality side of it was probably one. I think he’s dealt with that really, really well.

“I think both ourselves and Arsenal are delighted with Charlie. I think Charlie is in a good place and he’s looking forward to the games coming up.”

Patino is certainly a talent to keep a close eye on moving forward with the Gunners tying him down until June 2025. His chances in an Arsenal shirt could arrive as soon as next season.
