When was the last time Arsenal won away at Tottenham?
The North London Derby has been dominated by the home side for the past decade.
This was a fixture controlled by the Gunners for much of Arsene Wenger’s reign, but Tottenham’s rise – which initially began with Harry Redknapp’s appointment in 2008 and was reignited by Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival in 2014 – has seen the contest evolve into the most competitive derby in the land.
It’s typically a thrilling encounter to watch for everybody apart from Arsenal and Spurs supporters. For us folk, the prospect of defeat is unbearable.
But, as I noted, the home side usually claims victory. Since 2012, the visitors have won just three of 25 derbies and it was Spurs who last won away from home in this fixture. For the Gunners, it’s been way too long and here’s a reminder of when they last pulled off a NLD win away from the Emirates.
When was the last time Arsenal won away at Tottenham?
Starting XIs
Tottenham: Vorm; Trippier, Fazio, Wimmer, Rose; Dier (N’Jie 85′), Carroll; Townsend (Son Heung-min 67′), Eriksen, Chadli (Dele 75′); Kane.
Arsenal: Ospina; Debuchy, Chambers, Mertesacker, Gibbs; Flamini, Arteta; Campbell (Sanchez 67′), Ramsey, Oxlade-Chamberlain (Walcott 89′); Giroud.
Mathieu Flamini was the hero the last time we tasted victory at Tottenham. White Hart Lane was still standing, Arsene Wenger was yet to feel the wrath of a toxic fanbase, and Mauricio Pochettino had just entered his second season as Spurs boss.
Flamini scored twice to help Arsenal advance at their bitter rivals’ expense in this League Cup third-round tie. The two managers rotated their respective starting XIs plenty for the game, with the likes of Mathieu Debuchy and Joel Campbell earning starts, while Mikel Arteta lined up in midfield alongside match-winner Flamini.
The unlikely hero fired home a superb volley 12 minutes from time to hand the Gunners victory, but their joy would be succeeded by despair as they were thumped 3-0 by Sheffield Wednesday in the fourth round.
When was Arsenal’s last Premier League victory at Tottenham?
Starting XIs
Tottenham: Lloris; Naughton, Kaboul, Vertonghen, Rose; Sandro (Paulinho 68′), Bentaleb; Townsend, Eriksen (Soldado 82′), Chadli (Sigurdsson 69′); Adebayor.
Arsenal: Szczesny; Sagna, Koscielny, Mertesacker, Gibbs; Cazorla, Arteta; Podolski (Monreal 77′), Rosicky (Flamini 69′), Oxlade-Chamberlain (Vermaelen 85′); Giroud.
Arsenal’s last Premier League win away at Spurs arrived at a time when our neighbours were in a bit of a dark place. Tim Sherwood was at the helm, the majority of their seven new arrivals purchased off the back of Gareth Bale’s departure had flopped, while they were reliant on Emmanuel Adebayor for a source of goals.
Tomas Rosicky compounded their misery when he struck early on in the derby back in March 2014 in what has to be regarded as one of the best-ever goals in this fixture. The contest was barely 90 seconds old when he beat Hugo Lloris with an unstoppable angled drive from the right.
However, there was no capitulation from the hosts and they instead proceeded to dominate the contest. Arsenal were forced to cling on in the second period, but cling on they did as they secured a 1-0 victory which briefly kept them in the title race.
