Leandro Trossard is an Arsenal player!

After missing out on priority target Mykhaylo Mudryk, the Gunners moved decisively in securing their plan B. Trossard was sounded out as Mudryk’s alternative, and a deal that could be worth up to £27m was wrapped up in no time.

The Belgian international could prove to be a savvy piece of business for the Premier League leaders, and he’s set to be available right away with Arsenal hosting Man Utd on Sunday afternoon.

The 28-year-old was in training on Friday afternoon, and the club confirmed the new signing’s shirt number as they welcomed him to the club.

What shirt number will Leandro Trossard wear for Arsenal?

Brighton’s former number 11 will wear the number 19 shirt at Arsenal, the club has confirmed.

Arsenal’s most recent holders of the number 19 shirt

  • Nicolas Pepe (2019-2022)
  • Bernd Leno (2018-2019)
  • Santi Cazorla (2012-2018)
  • Jack Wilshere (2008-2012)
  • Gilberto Silva (2002-2008)

Trossard has taken Nicolas Pepe’s number 19 shirt. The Ivorian is currently out on loan at Nice and it’s likely that he’ll never play a competitive game for the Gunners again with the club poised to seek a permanent sale in the summer.

Bernd Leno briefly held the shirt before Pepe’s record-breaking arrival, as the German goalkeeper succeeded a cult hero in serving as Arsenal’s number 19. Santi Cazorla dazzled supporters with his wizardry towards the end of Arsene Wenger’s tenure as he helped the club to two FA Cup triumphs before injuries took their toll and he departed in 2018.

Central midfielders Jack Wilshere and Gilberto Silva each donned the shirt in the 21st century, with both enjoying prosperous Arsenal careers. While Wilshere’s was cut short, the Brazilian became an Invincible in north London and is widely regarded as one of the most underrated players in Premier League history.

So, the number 19 shirt has endured mixed success in recent times with Pepe, in particular, struggling to live up to expectations. There’s no such hype for Trossard following his arrival, but many hope that the Belgian will do a job down the stretch as the Gunners go in search of their first Premier League crown since 2004.
