Even when it became clear that Manchester City would be waltzing to their third successive Premier League title, Arsenal still had ambitions of becoming the 14th team since the competition’s inception of amassing 90 points in a single season.

However, back-to-back defeats in May have crushed that possibility and the Gunners currently sit on 81 points with just a game remaining.

Despite their recent malaise, many expect Mikel Arteta’s side to go out in style on Sunday against a Wolves side that hasn’t won away from home since 11 February when they beat Nathan Jones’ Southampton 2-1. They’ve recently been thrashed 6-0 by Brighton and brushed aside by Man Utd on their travels, and Arteta will want his team to finish the campaign in a similar vein to last season (5-1 win over Everton).

Should they finish the season with a win over Wolves, Arsenal will end with 84 points, but where would this haul rank among the Gunners’ best Premier League seasons?

An 84-point haul would mark a 15-point jump from 2021/22 as Arsenal finished fifth with 69 points last season.

Even if Arsenal were to lose this weekend, an 81-point finish would rank fifth in Arsenal’s Premier League history regarding single-season points records. This is the club’s most productive points season since 2007/08 (83pts), and many have drawn comparisons with this term and the fateful campaign on 07/08 which took a turn for the worse after Eduardo broke his leg at Birmingham in February.

After starting the season having lost just one of their opening 26 games, Arsenal endured a four-game winless run after the draw at St. Andrews before eventually finishing four points adrift of eventual winners Man Utd in third.

A win on Sunday will see the current iteration usurp the 2007/08 and 2004/05 outfits and notch the third-highest points tally in Arsenal’s Premier League history. The Invincibles (90pts) and title-winning side of 2001/02 (87pts) are the current top two.
