Thursday 16 June 2023 was not the most promising of days on the transfer front for Arsenal.

The club’s opening bid for priority target Declan Rice was quickly rejected, and the possibility of Man City hijacking the deal has many supporters concerned. Moreover, interest in Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo is said to have cooled, and the Gunners seem keen on spending big money to bring Kai Havertz to the Emirates.

Talented? Sure, but that’s a move laden with risk considering the potential finances involved.

Nevertheless, the day began with a bit of excitement as the Premier League revealed the schedule for the 2023/24 season. There’s little to discuss at this time of year with pre-season not getting started until July, and there’s only so much we can talk about on the transfer front without driving ourselves to the brink of insanity.

Thus, the fixture release brought about some calming respite, and even if the excitement was brief, it was nonetheless soothing to forget about transfers for a little while.

Many dreaded a tricky away trip, perhaps to Luton, but the Premier League instead handed the Gunners a kind opener at home to Nottingham Forest. Steve Cooper’s side picked up a league-low eight points on their travels last season, and Arsenal thumped them 5-0 back in October with Reiss Nelson bagging a brace.

The Gunners’ opener will be the first Saturday lunchtime kick-off of the season.
