Arsenal will kick off their pre-season campaign later in the week as they face 2. Bundesliga side FC Nürnberg.

The two sides met last Summer during pre-season in a 5-3 affair that went Arsenal’s way. The German side, then managed by Robert Klauß, shocked the visitors as they went 2-0 up in the first half. However, after Arsenal relied on two goals by debutant Gabriel Jesus and a stroke of luck as the home team scored two own goals, the Gunners came home 5-3 victors.

Arsenal ended their impressive league campaign strongly after Manchester City were crowned victors, Arteta’s men defeated Wolves 5-0 on the final day. Since then, Arsenal’s only game has been their 1-1 draw against Watford in a behind-closed-doors friendly at London Colney.

Dissimilarly, Nürnberg have had a fixture-congested month as they played four games in the last 12 days and have picked up a stunning collective score of 19-4 against the various opposition teams. After their friendlies, Nürnberg will look to improve on last season as they narrowly avoided relegation by eight points.

Arsenal team news

Arsenal have travelled to Germany with a 30-man squad consisting of first-team stars and youngsters who will be looking for an opportunity to impress.

However, Emile Smith Rowe and Nuno Tavares are still on their off-season holidays after representing their nations in the U21 European Championships. Fellow Gunner Matt Turner is still on international duty with the USMNT as they face Panama in the Gold Cup semi-final on the same day as the friendly. Sambi Lokonga has also not travelled to the summer camp as he recovers from a ‘small muscular injury’.

New signing Kai Havertz has travelled to his home nation with the rest of the squad as he sets to make his debut in Arsenal’s red and white. Unconfirmed signing, Jurriën Timber may be included in the friendly if he is officially unveiled in time while Declan Rice will most likely not be seen in an Arsenal shirt until the America tour.

FC Nürnberg team news

The German side will be without defenders Christopher Schindler and Erik Wekesser, who both suffered cruciate ligament injuries during their previous league campaigns.

In their preparations to face the London side, Jannes Horn suffered a hip injury whilst Taylan Duman obtained a hamstring injury. According to the club, the two players “will not be fully available again for 1. FC Nürnberg in the near future.”

In better news, after already scoring in their previous game, new summer signing, Kanji Okunuki will look for a second goal in his new shirt to make another good impression on the home crowd.

FC Nürnberg vs Arsenal predicted lineups

While the visitors will most likely name a weaker side, the German team may look to play a strong team as it is their penultimate scheduled friendly before their league restarts.

For the Gunners, youngsters such as Folarin Balogun, Amario Cozier-Duberry and Ethan Nwaneri may feature alongside current backup options like Cedric Soares, Rob Holding and Reiss Nelson may also be rotated into the XI.

Throughout pre-season, Cristian Fiél has opted to rotate his full XI during half-time but against opposition with a much higher calibre and as the season rapidly approaches, Fiél’s side will most likely not see as many changes as previous games.
