Arsenal take on Manchester United in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon and they will be looking to match the results of some of the previous fixtures.

The two sides have faced one another 16 times in the competition, the second-most of any fixture in FA Cup history behind Merseyside rivals Liverpool vs Everton (19 meetings).

While United hold the advantage in the head-to-head with eight wins to the Gunners' six, the North London club have picked up some impressive results against one of their biggest rivals. There are three FA Cup encounters between Arsenal and Man Utd that stand out as the best.

Fans of a certain age will remember this one fondly. With Arsenal wearing their famous yellow away strip, captain Pat Rice led a side featuring the likes of Pat Jennings, David O'Leary and Liam Brady onto the original Wembley pitch to take on Manchester United.

The Gunners went into half-time with a comfortable 2-0 lead courtesy of goals from Brain Talbot and Francis Stapleton and looked certain to be securing the trophy with four minutes to play. United had other plans, however, as they scored twice in two minutes through Gordon McQueen and Sammy Mcllroy.

The final looked set to go to extra-time but afro-sporting striker Alan Sunderland was on hand to end a swift Arsenal attack in the 89th minute and win it for his side. Regarded as one of the greatest and most dramatic FA Cup finals of all time, it gave the Gunners their fifth triumph in the cup and also one of their best encounters with Man Utd in the world's oldest football competition.
